Exploiting the potential of 3D printing for industrial manufacturing

Merkle & Partner: Additive Manufacturing Workshop

For more than five years, Merkle & Partner GbR has been working together with Aalen University on the challenges of 3D printing in order to make additive manufacturing usable for safety-relevant components in industry. The project partners will communicate the latest findings from the joint ROAD3D research project to an interested specialist audience on 11.11.21 as part of the all-day workshop "Additive manufacturing - from material to strength assessment" in Heidenheim.

For safety-relevant, dimensionally accurate as well as functional components, 3D printing offers enormous potential - unfortunately still with some teething problems. With a view to the possibilities of this technology, Merkle & Partner has for years been pursuing new technologies, methods and approaches, as well as solutions to still unsolved technical challenges of 3D printing, together with Aalen University in the joint research project ROAD3D (Robust design and dimensioning of safety-relevant components for 3D metal printing).

The latest findings in this regard provide insights into how to deal with and avoid residual stresses and distortion in the component, which are caused by the fusion of the material under high temperatures. In addition, simulation technologies are used to address appropriate manufacturing boundary conditions and strength aspects early in the design process. The workshop offers profound insights into the latest findings for design engineers and product managers who are active in the field of additive manufacturing or who would like to expand their knowledge or business areas here.

Workshop Additive Manufacturing

"We are using state-of-the-art technologies to make additive manufacturing viable for safety-relevant components as well. Our new research findings bring us a good deal closer to this goal," says Dr.-Ing. Maik Brehm, head of the structural mechanics division and responsible for the ROAD3D project at Merkle & Partner GbR.

Note regarding Covid-19:

A hygiene concept will be available for the event. Participants must be vaccinated, recovered or tested. Proof must be provided accordingly prior to the event. If current COVID-19 regulations do not allow for an on-site event at the time of the event, the event will be held virtually via TEAMS.
