Operational stability of a diverter shaft in the exhaust gas flow

The diverter damper and its shaft direct the exhaust gas flow of a gas turbine either to the boiler or to the stack. The components are thus permanently exposed to the hot exhaust gas flow.

1. flow simulation for thermal load determination

The thermal load on the components in the exhaust gas stream (600-700 °C) depends primarily on the flow pattern. This depends on the position of the diverter damper and can be calculated with the aid of a CFD simulation.

The CFD results are:

  •     Heat transfer coefficients at the diverter shaft and at the blade.
  •     Pressure losses in the duct
  •     Flow loads on the blade

With the results, a detailed design of the fatigue strength and creep behavior of the components can be performed.

2. calculation of thermal stresses

Using the CFD results, thermal calculations can be performed and the resulting thermal stresses superimposed on mechanical loads.

Possible calculations are:

steady-state calculation of specific operating points to determine static strength and creep resistance (e.g., stack closed, boiler closed, intermediate position of the blade)

transient calculation of start-up and shut-down processes to determine the operational strength

Based on the results, critical points can be identified and the geometry modified so that safe operation is ensured. The verification is carried out optionally via stresses or strains, taking plasticization into account.

If desired, standards such as ASME Sec. VIII, Div. 2, ASME Sec. III NH or the KTA can also be used.
