The notched bar impact test (DIN 10045) is used for the simple investigation of the toughness properties of metals. Here, the work required to break the bending specimen is regarded as the toughness measure of the material under investigation. The test allows conclusions to be drawn about the behavior of a material under impact loading, which enables a qualitative statement to be made regarding the energy absorption capacity of a material.

Task/ Calculation

  • realistic modeling of cracks by means of FE model
  • numerical simulation of crack propagation
  • determination of crack growth direction and speed
